Worn

I wore the shirt
Softest plaid
Long before
Kurt made it cool,
On days when the poison
Coursed through my veins
Sleeves rolled up
As the needle dripped
Red like Kool-Ade.
I wore the shirt
On summer nights
Laying on the carpet
Listening to the words
Laughing with friends
Beer flowed like water.
I wore the shirt
When a princess died
Drinking coffee
Watching with tears
I wiped on my shoulder
Wrapped like a blanket
Comforting me.
I wore this shirt
As I walked the lonely street
doc Martens making no sound
In the darkness where I belonged
To the night and the neon,
I wore this shirt
As they covered him with dirt
I walked away
Feeling old and worn
Like this tattered shirt
I wear today
Thirty years gone by
A hole here and there
And I wouldn’t have it
Any other way
Because the familiar can soothe
Can raise a soul above
Yesterday and a memory.

I am a sometimes poet on a quest to master the universe of my mind. My writing runs the gamut of nature, off beat, life and basically the world as I see it through the windows of my eyes. Welcome to my blog. Sit a spell in your big comfy armchair or favorite spot and read for a while if it suits and don't forget to leave a comment to let me know who you are and all that jazz. Looking forward to what each day brings and catch you on the flip side of the stars. Peace and blessings.

  1. Love the poem. I wore my flannel and holey jeans after Kurt. And I also tried out a few ugly sweaters for good measure. I have never been much of a trend follower, but more than anything I felt like those clothes just fit me. At that time anyway, they were the best outward expression of what was inside. Thanks for all the likes by the way. I get to busy to always pay back, but I had some time today and I’m loving everything I read. 🙂
